The abstract narrative of music and its role in developing awareness
The abstract narration of music
Free from the reins of fashion and commodification, as well as detached and independent from playful and social roles and from the function of narrative support for words and images, music thus acquires the dimension of independent and pure art.
It will therefore be possible to speak of an “abstract narration of music”, which finally “tells about itself”, in perfect expressive solitude.
What is music about when it is separated from other narrative contexts?
It can express itself by communicating with our subconscious, stimulating our archetypes through emotional symbols related to them, woven into sound form into the fabric of conventional musical form and aesthetics.
Musical forms change with the times, and their aesthetic codes are likewise renewed, while archetypes remain as an expression of our immutable human nature.
Music that responds only to form and aesthetics offers a more or less appreciable artistic value, according to the ability and care of the person who "architected" it, but still of secondary importance, as it lacks “a deep narrative element” that defines it as Art with a capital “A”.
Archetypes, on the other hand, in the sense I intend to suggest here, "tell" beliefs rooted in the unconscious and charged with emotions: fears, needs and desires that coincide with the essence of individual and shared human nature.
The growth of awareness
Such psychic archetypes are evoked and brought to consciousness by means of symbols, which constitute the “significant reminder of the meaning of the archetype”.
The artistic "musical narrative" can therefore express itself through "sound symbols" capable of evoking the "beliefs" (and related emotions) contained in the human unconscious, finally bringing them to consciousness, alleviating part of their weight, irresistibly orienting our existences towards dimensions closer to our essence.
Musical art proceeds from technical and intellectual ability, as well as from the conscious and unconscious emotional sensitivity of the artist, whether it is the fruit of research, inspiration, instinct, or more often a combination of these elements.
Operating within the form and aesthetics of the composition (elements of great formal value, but having a neutral valence in this sense), this art, through sound symbols, can offer a powerful stimulus to the "initiated" listener, urging him towards the evolution of consciousness and the discovery of the Self.
Due to its peculiarity, music can achieve such results without using logical concepts, which are better articulated through language and images.
In this sense it is perhaps the most abstract and profound of the arts… and our age is destroying it.
Like any "mysterious" manifestation, initiation into the depths of music becomes crucial, which is a personal and progressive journey of approaching it and its essence, articulated in various phases: encounter, recognition, knowledge, understanding, love.
